Grey hair linked to higher heart disease risk Men with more grey hair -- irrespective of age -- may be at increased risk of heart disease, warns a new study. "Our findings suggest that, irrespective of chronological age, hair greying indicates biological age and could be a warning sign of increased cardiovascular risk," said Irini Samuel, a cardiologist at Cairo University, Egypt. Atherosclerosis, build-up of fatty material inside the arteries, and hair greying share similar mechanisms such as impaired DNA repair, oxidative stress, inflammation, hormonal changes and senescence of functional cells. "Atherosclerosis and hair greying occur through similar biological pathways and the incidence of both increases with age," Samuel added. This study -- presented at EuroPrevent 2017, annual congress of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC), being held at Malaga, Spain from April 6-8 -- involved 545 adult men. The researchers as...

State of emergency in Egypt as church bombings toll reaches 44

State of emergency in Egypt as church bombings toll reaches 44             Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced a three-month state of emergency following twin church bombings by the Islamic State group that killed dozens on Palm Sunday, the deadliest attacks on the minority in recent memory. The attacks in the Nile Delta cities of Tanta and Alexandria followed a Cairo church bombing in December and came weeks before a planned visit by Catholic Pope Francis intended to show support for Egypt's Christian minority. Sisi declared the "three-month" state of emergency, which he must present to parliament within a week, during a defiant speech warning that the war against the jihadists "will be long and painful". The first bombing at the Mar Girgis church in Tanta city north of Cairo killed 27 people, the health ministry said. Emergency services had scrambled to the scene when another blast rocked Saint Mark's c...

Hollywood honours father-son filmmakers Carl, Rob Reiner

Hollywood honours father-son filmmakers Carl, Rob Reiner             Father and son filmmakers Carl and Rob Reiner were honoured Friday for a combined 130 years in show business when they sunk their hands and feet into wet cement on Hollywood Boulevard. The celebration marked the first time in the 90-year history of the imprint ceremonies at the TCL Chinese Theatre—originally Grauman’s Chinese Theatre—that a father and son had been honoured together. The event was part of the TCM Classic Film Festival. “Few fathers and sons are as accomplished as Carl and Rob, and none are as funny,” Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz said. Carl Reiner, 95, started out as a Broadway performer, getting his television break when he joined Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca on the live variety series “Your Show of Shows.” He shot to fame as the creator of hit situation comedy “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and went on to direct iconic Steve Mart...

Peanuts may prevent heart attack

Peanuts may prevent heart attack             Eating peanuts with a meal may help protect against cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and stroke, an international team of researchers has found. After a meal, there is a spike in blood lipids, and triglycerides -- a type of fat found in the bloodstream - which stiffen arteries and lead to cardiovascular disease. The findings showed that healthy men who ate about three ounces of peanuts with a high-fat meal had a blunted increase of lipids in their bloodstream. There was also a 32 per cent reduction in the triglyceride levels after the consumption of the peanut along with the meals. "Typically, whenever we eat something, it causes the arteries to get a little bit stiffer during the post-meal period, but we have shown that if you eat peanuts with your meal, this can help prevent the stiffening response," said Penny Kris-Etherton, Professor at ...
